St. Louis Fed’s Mary Suiter Awarded for Economic Education Leadership

ST. LOUIS - Assistant Vice President Mary Suiter, the economic education officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, was named the 2019 winner of the John C. Schramm Leadership Award from the National Association of Economic Educators.

The award has been given annually since its creation in 1986 to honor an economic educator whose leadership has had an extraordinary, positive impact at both the state and national levels.

Jennifer A. Davidson, the president-elect of the National Association of Economic Educators, gave Suiter the award at a recent conference: “Mary is a force of nature; a colleague everyone hopes to have in their profession.”

Suiter oversees the St. Louis Fed’s Econ Ed at the Fed, which offers more than 400 free educational resources about economics, personal finance, money, and banking. In addition, the St. Louis Fed’s Econ Lowdown™ teacher portal allows teachers to create a syllabus of resources and assign the syllabus to students. The St. Louis Fed’s lessons, videos, online courses and more are free and available for pre-K through college, as well as for parents and other consumers.

Davidson also stated, “Under Mary’s leadership, the St. Louis Fed’s economic education programs have reached tens of thousands of teachers and millions of students across the United States and is considered the gold standard in economic education.”

Suiter is a past president of NAEE and a recipient of the NAEE’s Bessie B. Moore Service Award, Patricia K. Elder International Award and the James O’Neill Economic Education Multiplier Award.

Recently, the St. Louis Fed’s Econ Ed team received the international 2019 Central Banking Award for financial inclusion by Central Banking Publications in London. The award highlights the group’s efforts in engaging and supporting teachers around the world through financial literacy tools and education.
