Students listen to the story Spend It! This story is set in Bunnyland where carrots are money. Sonny the bunny has three carrots in his allowance jar. Sonny wants to buy everything, and he learns that he must make a choice because he does not have enough carrots to spend on everything he wants. Students will learn and review new vocabulary from the story (spend, wants, and choice) by completing a spelling activity, and complete a statement using the words. Students will also earn carrots by completing addition and subtraction math problems. Using the carrots they earn, students work with a partner to calculate if they have enough to purchase a toy they want from a list provided to them.

Earn It! Lesson for Grades 1-2

In this lesson, students develop a beginning understanding of the relationship between work, income, and human capital. Students first think about the work they and their family members do and then identify which of their examples was done in exchange for income. Students then listen to a read aloud of Earn It! and learn how a bunny who wants to be a famous singer discovers the connection between human capital, work, and income. Students will play a board game where they role-play what workers might do in different businesses, and they identify work they would like to do in the future to earn income and the human capital they will need to do that work.

Give It! Lesson for Grades 1-2

In this lesson, students think about ways they have been helpers in their families, schools, and neighborhoods. Students listen to a read aloud of Give It! and learn how Chummy the bunny makes choices that help his community. After reading, students discuss how each of the bunny’s plans involved giving up something and gaining something else, as well as the benefits and costs of the bunny’s decision of how to use his birthday carrots. Students think about when they were helpers and identify the costs and benefits of their choice to help.

Save It! Lesson for Grades Pre-K and K

In this lesson, students learn about income, saving, and spending. They listen to the story Save It! and identify examples of when Honey is earning income, saving, and spending. Students also participate in a die-rolling activity to track whether Honey has saved enough money for her playhouse. Next, students identify whether certain pictures are examples of kids saving or spending money. They then have the option to follow along with another story about saving and spending by counting with pennies and copying actions mentioned in the story.
